I was catching up on my daily MSNBC stories today and learned that NASA is naming a treadmill after Stephen Colbert. Earlier this year, NASA held an online contest asking consumers to name a room at the space station. With write-in votes, the name “Colbert” beat out NASA’s four suggested options: Serenity, Legacy, Earthrise and Venture.
And while NASA maintained that it would not name the room after the Comedy Central comedian because it does not name rooms after living people, I think having an exercise machine named after you in space is just as exciting. What makes this story more fun is the acronym that NASA came up with for the machine – Combined Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill (COLBERT).
Stay tuned to see if Stephen Colbert travels to Florida for the launch of COLBERT into space and to Houston to test a version of the treadmill the astronauts train on.
