Gazing into the crystal ball, online blogs, entertainment magazines and the daily news, the JSH&A prognosticators have compiled the Top Trends for 2011, plus a couple random predictions.

Technology

  • Smartphone sales will eclipse PC sales and the android platform will surpass the iPhone.
  • Google’s launch of the next generation of mobile computers will overwhelm even the Apple iPad enthusiasts.
  • Mobile apps will be everywhere in the “appmosphere” and play a major role in marketing campaigns. “App” will have its own app and more companies will include mobile tactics on smartphones, tablets, etc. to their campaigns.
  • Facebook will become the popular platform for daily access to email, calendars, movie schedules, bank account information and other necessities of life just by adding buttons for increased functionality.
  • MySpace will partner with Twitter to compete with Facebook for the title of ultimate social media channel.
  • Gaming technology will be a hot tactic to engage brands with consumers. Competition, reward points and alignment with popular online game sites (i.e. Cascadian Farms and Farmville) will help build strong ties with consumers.

Media

  • Newspapers will be segmented by issues/topics and look similar to blogs.
  • Blogger “desk-sides” and destination consumer blogger events will become a standard tactic for media outreach campaigns.
  • Internet TV, especially for movies, will replace cable subscribers as new functionality for sharing/uploading videos.
  • Traditional media will regain some share with higher quality editorial content and insights not provided from quick-take social media sources.

Business

  • More corporate conglomerates will break apart to focus on their core business.
  • Telecommuting and virtual offices will become normal in business.
  • Consumers will demand social responsibility, especially related to the environment, and will hold corporations accountable for negligence.

Lifestyle

  • Bottled water will be on the boycott list as tap water becomes the new “in” beverage.
  • “Environment,” “Sustainability,” and “Recycling” will be the buzz words in homes and business – regardless of viewpoints on Global Warming.
  • Specialty mobile food trucks will be popular with social media networks driving consumers to find them.
  • Entertainment reality shows and movies with family appeal will abound – think Glee.
  • Fashion will feature a modernized retro look with earth tones and tie-dyes as well as strong black and whites popped with hot colors. Lady Gaga bacon-couture will be replaced by orange hues – mango, persimmon and pumpkin.
  • Skinny jeans will be out – welcome back flattering flares and boot-cuts – and hemlines will drop – though minis will always be in fashion.

Random Predictions

  • Jim Kokoris will be named to the NY Times best-seller list.
  • EVERYONE will grow tired of Lady Gaga and Justin Beiber.
  • The Cubs will be terrible… again.

Best,

Jonni Hegenderfer

Insight on Leadership from Tom Hsieh of Zappos.com

July 27th, 2010 | by: Deanna Killackey

When it comes to buying shoes on the Internet, what’s the first online retailer that comes to mind?  For me, it’s Zappos

Sure the return policy, selection and often-free shipping are nice, but the personalized customer service is what really deliveres positive word-of-mouth buzz for this company. And with the debut of his new book “Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion and Purpose,” CEO Tom Hsieh continues to be the talk of the town.

I had the opportunity to hear Hsieh speak during last week’s “Super Genius” conference presented by Gas Pedal.  While he could have presented a typical sales case study on the company, Hsieh took a different approach to his keynote address by speaking about the Science of Happiness and the role happiness plays in one’s life — both personally and professionally.  He spoke about the importance of being adventurous, creative and open-minded, asking the audience “What would you be happy doing in 10 years? That’s what you should be doing now!”

From a business perspective, Hsieh noted that there are two main ingredients that make up great companies — 1) culture and 2) a higher purpose or vision.  With these two ingredients, other business elements such as great customer service or building a long-term enduring brand will happen naturally.  He stated that it doesn’t matter what your core values are as long as you commit to them.  Many companies have core values or guiding principles, but they tend to be lofty or read like a press release. Or in some cases, the values are shared during day-one orientation and never revisited throughout one’s career unless you pass by the plaque hanging on the conference room wall.

For Zappos, Hsieh and his team created 10 committable core values.  These 10 values are principles that the company is willing to hire and fire people by based on whether they are living up to them, independent of their actual job performance.

When all is said and done, Hsieh’s business approach is smart.  It’s one that truly inspires passion and people and in turn delivers results!

Zappos Core Values:

  1. Deliver WOW through service
  2. Embrace and drive change
  3. Create fun and a little weirdness
  4. Be adventurous, creative and open-minded
  5. Pursue growth and learning
  6. Build open and honest relationships with communication
  7. Build a positive team and family spirit
  8. Do more with less
  9. Be passionate and determined
  10. Be humble

Wednesday’s LIF STYLE Watch

LIF Style watch blog logo

Wednesday again?  Gosh time is flying by, but we here in Chicago can’t wait for warmer weather.

When it comes to consumer trending and implementing JSH&A’s signature LIF Style PR approach, it’s important to monitor what’s happening in the economy.  Did you know that only 7% of Americans agree with Ben Bernake, chair of the Federal Reserve, when he announced that the recession was over?  According to the “American Pulse Survey,” those aged 18-34 are the most likely to believe the recession is over, while those 35-54 are the most likely to think it is not.  I wonder what this means for families shopping habits and using financial planning tools to plan their budgets.

Here’s a couple other interesting stats that I stumbled upon.  Considering the big tax day – April 15 – is upon us, it only seemed relevant to share.

  • Question: What Do You Plan To Do With Your Tax Refund?
  • Answers:
    • Pay Off Debt — 36% (2008) v 31% (2009)
    • Save It — 18% (2008) v 20% (2009)

If you walk the halls of JSH&A, you may find JSH&A’s Chief Vision Officer Jonni Hegenderfer talking about the agency’s LIF™ Style strategy. From attitudes and preferences to media habits and consumer trends, JSH&A’s trademarked LIF Style approach bring new understanding to communicating with consumers.

As part of our reoccurring Wednesday blog the “LIF Style Watch,” we’ll take a look at some of the latest statistics that may impact your next campaign. We’ll share new media habits and findings from tried-and-true public relations tactics. Enjoy and be sure to pass it along!

In recent news:

  • Facebook fans and Twitter followers of a brand are more likely to not only recommend, but they are also more likely to buy from, those brands than they were before becoming fans/followers. A recent article shared by Media Post, found that 60% of Facebook fans and 79% of Twitter followers are more likely to recommend those brands since becoming a fan or follower. And 51% of Facebook fans and 67% of Twitter followers are more likely to buy the brands they follow or are a fan of.
  • 20% of the top 10 most-tweeted brands this week are dead-celebrity brands – Notorious B.I.G., Chuck Norris and Corey Haim
  • More men than women prefer to communicate with others via a cell phone conversation after searching for a product or service online (The Retail Advertising and Marketing Association, a division of National Retail Federation, 2010)

Livin' and Learnin' About Comebacks

March 10th, 2009 | by: Deanna Killackey

If Britney can do it, anyone can. Right?

Perhaps the most noteworthy pop singer of all time – Michael Jackson, a.k.a. the King of Pop, announced a comeback this week with concert dates set for July in London. And while we’ve seen pop singers do it before, are comeback tours really worth all the hype?  I wonder if Jackson can reach the same pitch or showcase his signature dance moves just as fans remember.

According to Jackson, his London concert dates will mark his last performances and the final curtain call of his singing career.  He plans to bring fan favorites like “Thriller,” “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “Billie Jean,” and “Beat It” to the stage.  FOX News and sources close to Jackson state the comeback is mostly for Jackson’s kids.  He wants them to see how he became the King of Pop.

But will Jackson’s last show really be the last?  Perhaps, but we’ve seen a similar phenomena before when Billy Joel performed his final show at Shea Stadium only to top it off with a second surprise show, featuring Paul McCartney.

Since I won’t have the pleasure of going to London this summer, I’ll pull out my white glove and enjoy tonight’s episode of “American Idol” instead.  It’s Michael Jackson week!!

Livin’ and Learnin’ About Friendship

The power of friendship goes without words.  And while we all have stories of our favorite childhood friend, a family member or trusted colleague lending support, have you ever seen friendship come to life among animal groups?

A koala nicknamed Bob puts his paw around fellow fire survivor Sam at the Southern Ash Wildlife Shelter in Rawson, Australia.

A koala nicknamed Bob puts his paw around fellow fire survivor Sam at the Southern Ash Wildlife Shelter in Rawson, Australia.

For this post, I thought I’d take the time to live and learn about 2 koalas who survived the Aussie wildfires together.  The stories I’ve read on MSNBC.com and social networking sites are amazing.

Koalas are especially vulnerable to wildfires because they move slowly on the ground.  Rarely coming down from the trees, koalas can be grumpy and prefer not to walk.  However, with the treat of wildfires and second-degree burns to his paws, a koala accepted the help of Aussie firefighter David Tree and sipped from his water bottle.  Later the same koala put his paw around a fellow bear – a sign of comfort and relief.

It just makes you think … how beautiful friendship is.
